Once you've waded through the prospectuses and worked out which universities or colleges you like the look of, you can start the application process.
When applying to university or college for a full-time course you will need to fill out the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) form. UCAS is responsible for organising and regulating the entry procedure for most courses in all the universities and most colleges in the UK, with the exception of the Open University.
You must complete your form by December 15th but it's a good idea to get it done earlier as your application may receive more thorough reflection if it's in before the closing date.
Most of you will want to apply for more than one course. The form allows you to apply for up to six courses but there are application fees for applying for multiple, single and additional courses.
When completing the form be sure to read the 'How to Apply' notes, which accompany it, first. Photocopy the form so you've got a rough copy to practise on. Write clearly in black ink using block capitals - UCAS uses computers to read your application so it must be clear. Be honest about your reasons for applying to particular places and don't attach any additional information.
You will receive decisions from your chosen universities a few weeks after application. Universities and colleges must decide whether or not to offer you a place by April 27th. The decision you will get from a university is based on one of the following:
U: Congratulations you've been accepted
C: A conditional offer, which is subject to you achieving certain grades
R: A reject, which simply means there is no place for you.
Your response can be a firm acceptance, either as a UF or CF - the latter indicates that this is your first preference. If you've been accepted you can also reply with an insurance acceptance, CI, or, for a conditional offer with conditions you feel you will easily meet, UI. Replying with a D means you are definitely not accepting the offer.
