Marketing is one of the more popular career choices with graduates because it promotes a glamorous image - you will get to attend events and meet 'interesting' people. But the industry can sometimes be misunderstood.
A career in this sector is very hard work; it involves a wide range of activities from market research, pricing and product development to advertising and brand awareness - you may find yourself responsible for one or more brands. The job can also involve a high level of statistical and financial analysis.
You will be responsible for exhibition co-ordination, brochure management, product management support and general office administration, working closely with production departments and sales managers. This can mean long hours and late nights.
Marketing involves a great deal of teamwork so if you're a loner, this is not the career for you. Good numerical skills, the ability to prioritise and well-honed communication and organisational skills are all essential for a successful career in this industry.
As long as you have a decent degree, you will find there are plenty of options within this area when you enter at graduate level. But don't expect to get straight to the top on day one. Marketing career structures are fairly slow to progress so if you want to be a high flyer by the time you're 30, then you'll probably need to move around a bit to get there.
Is this the career for you?
