This means there is a wealth of job opportunities for graduates with computer science or computer programming degrees, who are conversant in languages such as Oracle, C++ and Java, and for software/hardware engineers.

Programming is the most common first job for a graduate within IT but many people work their way up the ladder to become systems analysts.

You will find there are plenty of options within the industry at this level - most large IT firms will recruit programmers with a minimum 2:1 degree. An A level within computing will also help and knowledge of particular systems and languages will prove an enormous bonus.

To give yourself a good start you will need to be able to analyse, think logically and demonstrate good numerical skills. It is important that you show good attention to detail and can work to deadlines. You will also need strong interpersonal skills and prospective employers will look for signs of initiative, so learn extra skills if you can.

Understanding the company you are applying to for a job is essential. By carrying out some research and knowing which computer language or languages the company uses, you can target your knowledge effectively and increase your chances of getting that job.

It is important therefore for you to consider your strengths and weaknesses and match them to the right company for you.

Once in a job, on-the-job training will usually take place for up to six weeks during the first year, with good companies providing further training at regular intervals.

Salaries can vary but typically programmers earn from £17,000 - £21,000 rising to £34,000 within two years. Once experienced, many people move into contracting, effectively becoming self-employed. The financial rewards of this can be huge but it is also a less secure environment to work in, with no guarantee of contracts when you need them.

Is this the career for you?

If so then why not apply for a job in sales now? Graduate IT Jobs
