Marketing is an enormously dynamic sphere of the business world in which graduates are able to gain excellent rewards and benefits. It is closely related to public relations and the two departments are often combined within a company.
Perceived as a glamorous sector but can sometimes be misunderstood. A career in this sector is very hard work; it involves a wide range of activities from market research, pricing and product development to advertising and brand awareness - you may find yourself responsible for one or more brands. The job can also involve a high level of statistical and financial analysis.
Most degree subjects are welcomed, however a marketing or strong numerical degree is an advantage. You will find there are plenty of options within this area when you enter at graduate level. But don't expect to get straight to the top on day one. Marketing career structures are fairly slow to progress.
Marketing involves a great deal of teamwork so if you're a loner, this is not the career for you. Good numerical skills, the ability to prioritise and well-honed communication and organisational skills are all essential for a successful career in this industry.
You will need to be energetic, enthusiastic and maintain a professional appearance and manner it is essential that you are articulate and forward thinking and show initiative and the ability to be self-motivated.
