2012 funding 'could boost graduate job prospects'

Extra funding unveiled for construction work on the 2012 Olympic site could help to boost "high-quality" graduate jobs in London, it has been suggested.

The Trades Union Congress has hailed the announcement of the cash injection, which will contribute towards construction of the Olympic village and media centres.

General secretary Brendan Barber said that unions are "pleased" that the funds have been earmarked for the work, adding that it could help to provide employment prospects in the area.

"This will provide first-class facilities during the Olympics and high-quality jobs for many years after the games have finished," he commented.

He claimed that the move is "exactly" the kind of support that the government should be offering.

It comes after an All Party Urban Development Group report stated that regeneration projects should provide employment opportunities for local people who live within the areas in which work is taking place.
