Regeneration work 'will continue'

Regeneration work is continuing despite the economic troubles, it has been claimed - something that could boost those seeking graduate jobs in the property or construction sector.

The industry can survive through the current slowdown if it is given the right support, local government minister John Healey has stated.

"If everybody stays committed and focused … the sector can get through the downturn for the good of deprived neighbourhoods, regeneration jobs and regional economies," he said.

Mr Healey noted that £775 million of funding brought forward by the government to help the construction market will alleviate pressure.

He was commenting on the publication of a report entitled The Credit Crunch and Regeneration: Impact and Implications, put together by Professor Michael Parkinson.

This argued that the industry should be offered aid through "long-term leadership and resources".

It outlined risks to regeneration that have been brought about by the economic slump, but stated that private and public sector finance will help support work.
