Crossrail work 'to create 14,000 jobs'

Around 14,000 jobs are set to be created through London's Crossrail project, it has been announced, something that may boost graduate recruitment in the area.

The body in charge of Crossrail - the largest construction scheme in Europe - has revealed that Bechtel has been appointed as a partner in the programme, a move that will generate thousands of positions.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson hailed the decision, stating that it demonstrates the "genuine momentum" being made on the work.

He commented: "The vast majority of the jobs required to fulfill these contracts will be created in London and the UK, which can only be good news."

Following the new appointment, Bechtel will oversee the building of the core central tunneled section of the rail development, which is set to boost the capital's transport capacity by ten per cent.

Recently, £170 million was earmarked by the government for improved rail links to new housing schemes, which it said will safeguard around 2,000 jobs.
