Graduate jobs seekers 'looking for security'

University students are widening their approach towards searching for a career in order to boost their chances of landing graduate jobs, it has been noted.

Martin Birchall, the managing director at High Fliers Research, said that less people are looking for roles in areas such as investment banking in the wake of the credit crunch.

Instead, they are seeking positions that offer more reliability, like teaching or the Armed Forces.

"Rather than chasing the very highest salaries, many students are opting for job security," commented Mr Birchall.

It comes after a survey by High Fliers found that 36 per cent of final year students feel they will begin a graduate job or be searching for one this summer.

In addition, around 17 per cent will take time out or go travelling, while 26 per cent will stay on at university to complete postgraduate courses, the poll showed.
