Grads should consider a job in the offshore oil industry

Graduates should be made aware of the variety and amount of engineering jobs available in the offshore oil and gas industry, claim experts.

According to Malcolm Webb, the chief executive of Oil and Gas UK it is "Britain's best-kept industrial secret."

He told The Scotsman: “The problem at the moment is that the offshore oil and gas industry is not known about. We say it is Britain's best-kept industrial secret."

The fact that the industry has an image problem is a growing concern. We need to continue to raise the profile of oil and gas in order to keep attracting skilled people, especially in areas that have to compete with renewables."

Webb highlighted that many highly skilled, knowledgeable graduates are being "poached" by the UK's increasingly popular renewable energy market.

There is a widespread misunderstanding about the oil and gas industry. A recent survey showed that 71% of Londoners alone thought the vast majority of our oil supply is sourced from abroad - actually, 94% of our oil comes from within Britain. Additionally, 43% thought our gas supplies came from abroad as well, when over two-thirds is sourced domestically.
