Wide range of applicants should consider accounting

<strong>An expert has said that graduate schemes in accountancy should not only be pursued by people with finance and accounting degrees.</strong><br /> <br /> Paul Stephenson, head of graduate schemes in Deloitte, said that there are opportunities in the sector for a wide range of people, including those with humanities degrees.<br /> <br /> Speaking to the Financial Times, he explained: &quot;I have found that humanities students may be better at the narratives while maths students are better at the numbers and in the end, it is important to put all kinds together in a team.&quot;<br /> <br /> He also suggested that graduates often start in accounting before moving into corporate finance.<br /> <br /> &quot;Getting them on an audit, however big or small, teaching them about understanding risk and developing a programme to mitigate risk, as well as the best team to handle that programme &ndash; and dealing with potentially difficult clients &ndash; is all part of the training,&quot; he added.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, KPMG last week announced a new graduate scheme that will see the professional services firm taking around 75 graduates from Durham University.<br /> <br />
