IT graduate scheme

As the UK's leading supplier of sugar, we built our first sugar factory at Cantley in Norfolk back in 1912. And that factory is still producing sugar to this day.

Since then, we've seen and introduced our fair share of innovations, from being one of the original manufacturers to add bar codes to packaging, to being the first UK food manufacturer to gain accreditation in quality management system BS5750, the forerunner of ISO9000.

We've also taken the hot water and CO2 that result from our sugar manufacturing process and used them to become the largest producer of salad tomatoes in the country. In addition we are the UK's largest supplier of quality Topsoil products to the landscape and amenity industries and make animal feed as another co-product. We are the first manufacturer of bioethanol in the UK and, thanks to our state-of-the-art gas turbines, sell power we produce back to the National Grid.

IT Graduate Scheme

There are few areas of our business that touch every aspect of what we do - from web to warehouse, from cache to cash management and from chat room to board room. Your career with British Sugar IT can place you at the heart of what we do. Put simply, IT Transforms.

The emphasis is on your development through delivering business benefits. The scheme offered through British Sugar is not your standard graduate offering. It is about doing a job, which makes a difference to our business and develops your skills.

From the start you will develop skills which will enable you to take business ideas and change requirements from initial concept, through design, build and final delivery into our business. During your first few months with us you will be given training on the most appropriate development tools and processes. Business skills are equally important to us and we will provide you with the relevant knowledge and support to understand our business.

You'll be working with business colleagues who may be non-technical, as well as working with third party organisations, who may be highly technical, to deliver innovative solutions or services.

Attributes
A 'can-do' attitude is essential plus a passion for making a difference. You'll need tenacity, an enquiring mind and the ability to deliver innovative, practical solutions too.

A positive approach coupled with great interpersonal and communication skills together with a talent for influencing those around you. You'll be a logical thinker who enjoys working through problems and coming up with new ways of solving them. Of course, in such a challenging environment you'll need the energy, tenacity and drive to stand out from the crowd. Managerial skills like task and time management are also crucial. Apart from that, we look for people who are keen to learn and can work well in a team.

Requirements
You do not need to have a specific IT-related degree, however, you need to have an appreciation of technology with a 2:1 or higher. If you can demonstrate industrial work experience, whether as a placement or summer job, even better.

Training & Development
You will start by taking a development support role in our Applications Support team. Experience with a series of applications and issues will see you addressing real business problems, meeting people from different disciplines and gaining exposure to a range of different processes. So when you come to analyse data and processes for application development, you can base your interpretations and suggestions on business realities and first-hand knowledge of practical issues. This will then form the next stage on your career route, developing changes to existing applications or creating new applications.

Your continual progress and development throughout the graduate scheme is paramount to your success. You will have an experienced coach and mentor to ensure you progress and keep up to speed. Every 6 months we will assess you against clearly defined objectives. You will receive all the support you require to enable you to meet our business and your personal goals.
