In a Nutshell
We think the best way to learn is by doing. So M&S graduates are given real responsibility working on real projects from day one. It’s hard work, fast-paced and always challenging. But by the end of it, they’ll be ready to move into a role that could be the start of a long and successful career with us.
The Schemes on Offer
Most graduates apply for a place on our Retail Management scheme, where they’ll work towards becoming a Commercial Manager in one of our stores. They don’t need a particular degree, just good people skills and commercial awareness. Alternatively, those with a relevant degree could apply for a Head Office role – like IT, design, buying, merchandising, product or food technology.
Getting Started
There are two start dates for the 2012 Retail Management scheme: one in April, one in September. All other graduate roles start in September. They’ll kick things off with a week in their store or Head Office department. After that, they’ll be invited to a graduate induction where they’ll meet people from other parts of M&S, and learn more about the company.
During the Scheme
All our graduates work their way through different placements, trying out different roles and areas. Nothing’s set in stone – if they need more time on a particular placement or a bit more training in something, no problem. We’ll shape the scheme to help then get the most out of it.
After the Scheme
When the scheme ends, they’ll also be ready for their first big M&S management role – perhaps leading a team, or running an area of the business worth millions of pounds. How far they go after that is entirely up to them.
