More than 4,000,000 aircraft movements take place in UK airspace every year. The traffic is directed safely and quickly on its way by highly trained air traffic controllers, using modern navigation and communication equipment, installed and maintained by expert air traffic engineers. Air traffic control (ATC) in the UK is the responsibility of the National Air Traffic Services (NATS).
NATS runs two training schemes; one is to train air traffic control officers (ATCOs) and one for engineer and science graduates. To be considered for either scheme you must be eligible to work in the UK, and for the ATCO scheme be aged at least 18 at the date of application. You must also pass a medical examination.
