Job Description

Sainsbury's is more than just a food retailer; it is a diverse business that enjoys universal appeal and a rich 140 year heritage. As one of the top retailers in the FTSE 100 there are a number of different ways for graduates to get involved. It is looking for exceptional graduates that will help bring fresh talent and ideas to the business and who are hungry to play a part of its continued success.

What does the scheme involve?
Product developers bring high quality, fresh, healthy and tasty own-brand products to our shelves.

The role is varied and the scheme reflects this. Your store placement is followed by placements at our London Store Support Centre in marketing and innovation, PR, health and packaging design. You will also work with a supplier to help understand the business from their point of view. You will then take ownership of a product area, making key decisions about the products we sell. This could include travelling to suppliers one day and meeting with packaging designers in London the next.

The time it takes from concept to launch depends on the product involved, for example it might take up to nine months to develop new flavours of soup. You will work with the food technologists, the supply chain people, buyers and marketing specialists to get a good understanding of what happens at each stage. It sounds like a long process but actually those times are all very tight

Because of the way the graduate scheme is organised you get thoroughly trained on all the different building blocks you need to make the right decisions. You get to practice in real situations and you get whatever support you need to get you up to speed. It's a perfect balance and, for someone who loves food and has an interest in nutrition, it's the perfect job.

What are we looking for?
People whose passion for food inspires customers and colleagues and who see the bigger picture as well as the details. You'll need to be willing to travel, have some previous work experience with food and have a minimum 2.1 degree ideally in home economics, food science, food marketing or a related subject.

What skills will you develop?
To develop the best products for our customers you'll need to hone your own culinary skills. Your project management will sharpen as you keep track of a number of products at different stages of development. You'll also develop broader business skills including presenting and influencing.

What are the benefits?

  • £25k starting salary Discretionary annual bonus
  • 22 days holiday
  • 10% staff discount after six months
  • You’ll take ownership of a product area
  • The satisfaction of managing a project from start to finish
  • Variety – from travel to suppliers one day to meeting with packaging designers in Holborn the next
