Sellafield Ltd has a proud history within the nuclear industry, dating back to its very earliest days in the 1940's. We've always been pioneers. In fact we developed the world's first commercial nuclear power station. Now, some 60 years later, we're still leading the way, this time in decommissioning plants and reprocessing spent nuclear fuel from the UK and other parts of the world. We have two key operational sites, Sellafield in West Cumbria and Capenhurst in Cheshire. At these sites we're carrying out some of the most innovative and complex nuclear decommissioning projects in the world. At Sellafield, the site contains more than 1,000 facilities all performing a wide range of tasks geared towards decommissioning the UK's nuclear legacy and fuel recycling, manufacture and waste management. Capenhurst is due to be the first UK nuclear site to complete its decommissioning and clean-up programme and, on the way, we've carried out one of the biggest demolition projects ever undertaken in the UK nuclear industry. Its management of the final stages of decommissioning offers other sites an insight into the challenges they'll face and provides a blueprint for success. A third site in Risley (near Warrington) is home to approximately 1,500 employees, most of whom are engaged on vital engineering and design related activities supporting the Sellafield site. Between these three sites we employ more than 10,000 of the most world's most experienced and skilled nuclear professionals.
