The low-downEver since earning the crown of best club in the South, Slinky has been sitting pretty by the mellow, curvaceous bay of Boscombe - shrine to hoards of fluorescent pilgrims week after week. Slinkys logo has changed, but the music policy remains solid (whatever is most popular at the time). The diverse blend of Seb Fontaine and Lisa Lashes when we visited the club is typical of Slinkys usual Friday mix.
Inside the dcor is lavish white drapes adorn the ceiling, large videoscreens silhouette the DJ and green lasers flash across the sweaty mad-fer-it crowd. Outside, the only indication of Slinkys popularity is the long queue of ticketless punters shivering in the cold (advance booking is strongly advised, especially on big nights). The night ends at 3am, perhaps a little early for a club of such high status, but that doesnt deter its band of loyal followers (Cries of Slinky Kids! can be heard echoing for most of the night who said Day-Glo was dead?).
Slinky recently stretched its legs in Birmingham and Leicester to little applause, and the nights were quickly withdrawn. The nights quest for UK domination may have come a little early, but the new night in Bristol is standing firm and the huge, touring one-nighters (both in the UK and abroad) are proving as popular as ever. However, theres no doubt that the best place to sample a little Slinky flavour is back in Bournemouth, where the crowd is as mellow and friendly as ever. It must be something in the sea air!
