Fashion on Campus - Volunteering Week
As part of ‘Volunteering Week’ a student led volunteering group known as M.A.D held a fashion show on Avenue Campus in aid of the charity Oxfam. M.A.D was founded by Pete Sara and Matt Pouncey, BA Business students and is run together with a group of students as a way to gain experience and raise money, all part of ‘doing their bit’ for volunteering. ‘We are here to let the Union know what us students want’, Pete announced over his microphone, ‘and tonight is not only in aid of Oxfam but in aid of us students with no money, this evening we can ethically swap our clothes for new ones without it costing a bomb.’
After paying a £1 entry fee, students participated in the 'clothes swap' portion of the event where students could bring their own clothes and swap them for whatever they saw on the catwalk.
Vimal Shah, Shop Manager at Oxfam came to the event adding his support. ‘I came here as a spokesperson for Oxfam and to see how well stock was used outside the shop,' he said. 'I was very impressed, but also to encourage students to get involved with volunteering. Not only is it rewarding but it’s a great step towards helping their employability chances.’
The only sour note was the poor turnout, but the participants weren't dismayed, saying they still enjoyed participating.
