A Week In The Life Of A Escp-eap Student

Emilie Galan

General Management Cycle, Oxford 2002-2003, Master's in Management

What does a week look like in Oxford? That is a question to which it will be hard to answer in a few words.

First of all, I can give you a piece of advice: if you are to live here, do not forget to invest in an agenda, otherwise you will miss a lot of interesting things. Thanks to mine, I can tell you briefly what it was to study here during the first term.

Monday 7.30am - It is hard to get up, but you have to: the classes begin at 9.00am in Cherwell House. It is only 5 minutes away from home, but it is up to you to get in the shower first as you live with three or four other students (rules have to be established!).

9.00-1.00pm - You are attending a lecture on European Business Environment. In the afternoon, some of us are free, some of us have language classes and others have found part-time jobs, (this is a good thing if you want to earn money, but then you risk missing out on some important events).

6.00pm - Goldman Sachs is holding a presentation at the Town Hall and you do not really know what investment banking is. Thus, you have to attend. This provides the opportunity to talk to recruitment personnel, to get phone numbers and eat and drink for free! After that, you have the choice between going home (very boring) or going into the centre to one of the many bars and cafés to meet other English and International students.

Tuesday Ah! A calmer day: 8 hours of classes (Accounting and Marketing). Do you still feel like going out after that? If you are courageous, you can attend the conference at Oxford Brookes University about China Development at 6.00pm.

Wednesday You finish at 4.00pm, leaving plenty of time to go to the Iffley Sports Centre or to Temple Cowley Swimming pool…in a business school you also have to keep fit!

By 6.30pm you have to be back at home to prepare for the 'Champagne and Chocolate Party', which you are invited to as a member of the Oxford Guild Society, it is a 'Black Tie' party which starts at 8pm until Midnight, where as the title suggests, you will be served Champagne and Chocolate.

12.00am, it is somewhat frustrating to finish at Midnight, but tomorrow you have classes. At this point, the sensible people will catch a taxi home; the others will carry on the party in another place, such as Thirst or The Old Fire Station.

Thursday This morning you have to work with a team for your EBE project…it can take place at Cherwell House or in one of your team members' houses. But if you got home really late, maybe you will just stay in bed, you will be too inefficient if you try and work any way!

But at some time you will have to get up and get dressed, because there is a meeting tonight with the Oxford Guild Society with Mercer Management Consulting. But if you are still hesitating, there is also an exhibition of top models at Oxford Brookes University, where they will be looking for new talents; you know that they would pick you if you were taller or slimmer!!

Friday A good day: the last day of classes! At 4.00pm its time to go to the sports centre or go for a walk along the Thames or in South Park (with the grey squirrels!). At 8.00pm, together with other student, you are going to the Oxford Playhouse, where they are performing the 'Westside Story'. That is quite fantastic! After that, you can go to a pub for a couple of drinks with your friends.

Saturday This morning, you can have along lie in. What a nice day! However, you will get up before 11.30am because at that time you have golf lessons, you have to adopt the UK culture!

In the afternoon, you can go shopping in the city centre. Have a wander around Cornmarket Street and the Covered Market, listen to the bands playing in the street, shop and take a good coffee at Nero or Coffee Republic. Or, from 2-4pm Rosa Bercero, the Spanish teacher, shows a video for us.

Saturday night, you can go for a meal with friends and watch a film at the cinema or maybe go to a nightclub, Saturday nights is the 'Banana Party' at Club Latinos.

Sunday Another good day! Again you can relax and sleep in, and then go shopping until 4pm (shops are open on Sundays between 10/11am and 4pm). Other ways to spend a Sunday are at the Sports Centre or at the Ashmolean Museum. At 5pm, you have to meet up with your team, because works needs to be done ready for Monday morning.

At 6.30pm you apologise to your team, 'but you really have to leave', you have been invited to a traditional dinner at St Edmunds College at 7.15pm.

7.15pm - the doors of the Old Dining Room open you have to wear a gown (an Oxford University tradition, that is still continued in most of the colleges), to enter the hall. After the prayer, you can sit down and begin the meal; it is a nice place and a nice meal. Then you will have a drink at the college bar, visit the school, the Old Library and you will end up in a warm place talking with your friend until.
