What It Is Like To Work In The Real World

Name: Conor Prenderville
Course: European Masters in Management (Berlin Stream currently in 2nd year)
Nationality: Irish
Age: 21 yrs old
Previous Studies: two years of undergraduate studies in Business in Trinity College Dublin.
Interests: My main interests (in order of preference) include travelling, school associations or societies, cinema and rugby. I believe that my interest in Business and Management derives from a basic need for communication with others.
Internship: Mercer Human Resource Consulting in Dublin, Ireland. It was possible for me to work in Ireland, as it's an Anglo Saxon speaking country.
1. Do you think doing an internship is beneficial?
Internships are the ultimate in practical business education. They allow you to put into practice what you have learned on the course and to see its effects first-hand. Yes, they're definitely beneficial.
2. In your opinion what have your gained from your internship?
I've gained a more realistic experience of what is expected from you in the world of business. I've also developed a deeper understanding of the kind of work that is done in my chosen field, Human Resources.
3. What are the best parts of your internship?
The best part of it is working as a contributing member of a team. My experience in ESCP-EAP has helped me to integrate better and fulfil the roles required of me, whether they be working efficiently with others or working imaginatively on my own projects.
4. What are the worst parts of your internship?
Integration is difficult and it always takes a few weeks for people to become aware of your capabilities. Up until that stage, they are hesitant in giving you work and having nothing to do is terrible. In my situation this lasted for about a week at the beginning where I really had to go and look for something to do.
5. Describe an average day during your internship? (What time you start, what projects you are working on, etc)
I get into the office around 9.30am and check my mails. I may have to follow up on work I did the previous day with certain members of my team. I usually have a meeting in mid-morning where the teams work for the day and my role in it will be specified. As well as this I would have several ongoing projects that I would be working on ranging from data entry to more imaginative proposal assessment. I would either have work with colleagues or friends or else I would have a quick sandwich while reading the paper. In the afternoon, I work on both my ongoing projects and teamwork. I finish between 5.30pm and 6.30pm when I go home or go for a pint with friends.
6. Has the internship helped you decide on your future career?
This particular internship has taught me quite a lot about all aspects of Human Resources and that the brief of the HR director is vaster than I would otherwise have imagined. I belief that my internship has taught me to value the human capital of enterprises and how this is managed. Although I don't think that I want to work in the HR function when finished, I do realise that it is paramount to the success of a business and must be run well.
