Santiago – Chile

The longest country in the world and one of the safest in South America for travellers. Chile's attractions are many and diverse: from stunning Fjords and snow-capped volcanoes in the Lake District; to the driest place in the world - the Atacama Desert, and the old colonial splendour of cities like Santiago. Chile is becoming a centre for the active and adventurous youngtraveller.

Riga

Capital city of Latvia, Riga combines historical squares and buildings with a vibrant social scene. Use it as a base to explore the rapidly westernising Baltic States - Estonia and Lithuania are easily accessible.

Lamu Island - Kenya

If you go in March you'll just beat the rainy season. Lamu is the new traveller 'hang out' - cheap and relaxing, with some of the most beautiful beaches in West Africa, Lamu popularity is increasing year on year. If you're planning to visit the island make sure it's at the end of your journey rather than the beginning - you may be tempted not to leave.

Koh Chang - Thailand

An alternative to the commercialism of Koh Samui and the Full Moon Frenzy of Koh Pangang, Koh Chang is the least developed of Thailand's famous tropical islands. Situated near to the Cambodian border, only recently have travellers started to explore the island in any great numbers.

Tarifa - Andalucia - Spain

Forget the Costas - young independent travellers are rediscovering Spain. The whole area steeped in culture, tradition and stunning natural beauty, with a very obvious Moorish and African influences. Tarifa is a traditional small town on the very tip of southern Spain - you can even see Morocco from the harbour. Weekend clubbing is fantastic and punctuated by spontaneous Flamenco. During the day it's year round sun, wild coastlines and afternoon siestas.

Queenstown - New Zealand

New Zealand has always been on the 'traveller' route but with the surge in popularity of Adrenalin sports it's become a must. Try the Awesome Foursome - bungee, white water, roller-coaster helicopter and jet-boat! Never mind skiing and sky-diving.

Pemba - Tanzania

Many travellers take the journey to Zanzibar but few continue on to Pemba, mainly due to the lack of infrastructure and public transport. This pretty island, with its wonderful beaches is quiet, scenic, interesting and almost untouched by tourism.

White Mountains - New England, USA

The activity centre of New England for those with a taste for adventure and love of the great outdoors. Depending on the season try mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing or hiking through this spectacular scenery only a few hours from the bustle of Boston.

Kerala - India

At the tip of Southern India, this area is slowly taking over from Goa as the backpacker haven. It is famed for fantastic vegetarian food, wonderful beaches, beautiful highlands and an intricate canal system.
