Software engineering is essential to every product developed at BAE Systems Rochester.
- Imagine a heads up display, that cant display any graphics
- Imagine a flight control computer that is unable to process the signals it is sent by aircraft sensors
- Imagine attempting to operate a 12 ton bus on electrical power only, without any information bout the current state of the system, or any means to manage the power required.
Its our Software Engineers that solve these problems, and more, using their knowledge and expertise of working with complicated systems to provide successful outcomes for both the business, and our customers.
Software Engineers work at the heart of our electrical products, working at all stages of the product lifecycle, determining initial requirements, designing functional prototypes, developing production standard solutions, and testing the finished product to its limits. Theyre specialists in their field, and are expected to have a detailed knowledge of the processes involved in creating and maintaining successful software applications, and the ingenuity and creativity to devise methods of producing optimum performance in the software they create.
It is essential for Software Engineers to be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, bringing their expert skills to the table. They work closely with both Hardware and Systems engineers to enable the development of complex real-world systems that have to perform perfectly every time, as the consequences of failure could be catastrophic. Software Engineers are also heavily involved in the research and development of new technologies, pushing technological boundaries to provide new capabilities for both military and civilian use, through the investigation of power management strategies, new methods of displaying information and combining data from video sources in real time to provide enhanced situational awareness.
Typical projects a Software Engineer at BAE Systems Rochester could expect to work on include:

- Digital mapping solutions for ground based personnel: Situational awareness for troops in hostile environments is key, and Software Engineers at Rochester are developing a system to provide each soldier with their own ability to identify and designate hazardous areas using wireless networking and global positioning data.
- Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for commercial airliners: Rochester is at the cutting edge of quantum waveguide optics, and it is the job of software engineers to enable the image that is to be displayed to be correctly calculated, formed, and displayed in real-time for clarity in all weathers
