Renew:Improve

One of the world's largest investor-owned energy companies, National Grid owns and maintains the 'grid' of towers (pylons) and gas pipelines which carries energy across Britain. As part of our commitment to improving services for everyone, we've launched a major engineering programme to renew the UK's network of gas pipelines. To deliver this high-profile work we need talented people to join our Construction Engineer Training Programme.

Once you complete the programme you will be a qualified Construction Engineer responsible for leading your team to deliver projects. These will range in size and complexity, but each will pose its own unique engineering - and people management - challenges. The business of replacing old pipes with new touches on many issues - technical, public access and safety, liaison with contractors, third parties and local Councils, so you will be stretched in many different ways.

Mixing on-the-job experience with formal technical and leadership training, the programme will last between two and four years - depending on your skills and qualifications on entry. At the end, you'll be a skilled team leader/manager with the following qualifications:

  • HNC in Mechanical Engineering
  • NVQ level 4 qualification in Engineering Management
  • Engineering Technician status with the Institute of Gas Engineers

To join the programme, you'll need a full driving licence (we provide the car!) together with at least 5 GCSEs (grade A-C) including Maths, English Language and one science, technology or engineering subject.Winner of Global Excellence Award

Whatever your background, you'll need the ability - or potential - to manage others, to organise your time, and to solve technical problems.
