LOOKING FOR a Network Engineer CAREER?
How much can I earn as a Network Engineer?
Entry level network engineer may pay around £19,000, rising to £35,000 with a few years’ experience. If you manage to secure a place on a structured graduate scheme, your starting pay is likely to be reflective of the size of your company and the responsibility that you’ll be given – according to High Fliers, in 2016 the average starting salary for a graduate within the UK’s top 100 companies is £30,000. Since their skills are essential and much sought-after, the earning potential for engineers is high – depending on location, senior engineers with a lot of experience and skill could earn between £50,000 and £100,000 per year.
What qualifications do I need to be a Network Engineer?
To become a network engineer it is beneficial to have studied one of the following subjects at university.
  • computer science
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • electrical engineering
The majority of graduate schemes will ask for at least a 2.1, and will have a structured interview process and cognitive tests to determine their best candidates. You can also take a masters in a specific area of the above in order to hone your skills before you applying for a job.
What skills do I need to be a Network Engineer?
The top skill requirements for engineers are practical – you will need to be focused, good with your hands, and of course have the scientific and/or IT knowledge and expertise required to diagnose problems and rectify them. Other essential skills include:
  • Communication
  • Reliability
  • Teamwork
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to continue learning
  • Analytical ability
  • Flexibility
What experience do I need to get a job in Network Engineering?
You should try to get as much work experience as possible, as aside from giving you on-the-job experience and practical skill will also prepare you for taking on a job role later. If you have been to university it is likely that your course will have included a sandwich year, in which you worked within a company learning the skills needed. Aside from this, you should approach companies and ask if you can go in for work experience or work shadowing during your university holidays or after graduation.
