How much can I earn as a Manufacturing Engineer?
Starting salaries for Manufacturing Engineers are usually between £22,000 and £28,000 and with experience they can range from between £25,000 and £40,000. Chartered Engineers can earn higher salaries in the region of £40,000 to £60,000, with the potential for even higher earnings in very senior positions. Chartered Engineers often work as consultants and charge companies by the hour. Figures are intended as a guide only.
What qualifications do I need to be a Manufacturing Engineer?
As a highly specialised area of work you’ll need a degree in engineering to become a Manufacturing Engineer. This does not need to be specific and these other engineering disciplines are also relevant to the role:
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
You can achieve incorporated engineer (IEng) or chartered engineer (CEng)status by studying for a qualification accredited by relevant professional body such as The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)or theInstitution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
For example, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is a professional organisation that supports people who work in the industry, offering training and networking opportunities that help with career development. It’s not necessary to have a Masters degree to enter into manufacturing engineering but, an engineering doctorate (EngD) or an integrated MEng degree can enhance your prospects.
What skills do I need to be a Manufacturing Engineer?
Mechanical Engineers have to combine mathematical, scientific, technology and employability skills during their day to day job. As a mechanical engineer you will be creative, a good problem solver, highly computer literate and have good attention to detail. Some skills that would be useful for a graduate mechanical engineering role include: Numerical/technical mathematics knowledge Problem solving Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines Creativity Analytical skills Design skills
What experience do I need to get a job in Manufacturing Engineering?
Like most industries displaying some prior work experience will be hugely beneficial in applying for jobs in mechanical engineering. Internships or summer work placements while at university will increase your chances of getting a job after graduation. Some degree courses offer a year placement in the industry, which will be invaluable in learning what the industry will be like and will help you make good contacts for the future. Student membership with a relevant professional body such as the IET or IMechE will help you keep up to date with news and developments in the industry.
