Rolls-Royce - There are lots of myths surrounding engineering

Like that it’s all dirty work (it’s not – engineering is about thinking as much as doing). That it’s not creative (it absolutely is – at Rolls-Royce, innovation is crucial to our success). And that it’s a job for the boys (far from it – as you can see from our films).

When we designed our first aero engine in 1914, very few women had professions and female engineers were practically non-existent. Then, between 1914 and 1918, the advent of war saw an estimated two million women replace men in employment. But the idea of women having careers or a profession didn’t really begin until the late 1960s – and even then, few specialised in engineering. The demographics of the UK were also very different back in 1914. Mass immigration into the UK began in earnest in the late 1940s and early 1950s. So it wasn’t just our engineers who were white and male. Back in 1914, it was pretty much everyone who worked for us – and for any other UK company.

Over the years, we’ve moved with the times. Today, we’re a global business, employing 113 nationalities worldwide.

There are still plenty of experienced engineers here, but the fact that we have so many experts on the team makes this a fantastic place to start your career. And what’s really exciting is that as we recruit for new talent, including for people like you, we’re making our entire team more and more diverse – here in the UK, and beyond.

We want everyone to be themselves at work, so to support those differences one of the things we’ve done is create employee networks, like our African Caribbean Professional Network; our WoMen’s Network; or PRISM, our LGBT network. These are groups of employees who share similar characteristics or life experiences. They provide support and contribute to personal and professional development. Each network hosts both social and work based events, so there’s plenty to get involved in.

So if you think engineering is a career for a certain type of person, you couldn’t be more wrong. Especially because, alongside our more technical and hands-on programmes, we offer a range apprenticeships, including Supply Chain Management, Management Accountancy and Project Management. At Rolls-Royce, we’re big believers that different perspectives make for the most innovative ideas; that success depends on everyone playing their part in a culture where difference is celebrated and you are free to be yourself.
