As both tuition fees and the cost of living increase, the need for students to bring in extra cash is more common. There are a wide variety of part-time jobs around, each paying at least the rate of National Minimum Wage that you're entitled to receive (see Pay Conditions). If it's quick cash you're looking for, part-time jobs such as bar work and waiting tables will give you the chance to receive tips and bonuses. So, your pay after a few hours work can end up being quite good! Extra cash means more money to go out, socialise, shop and travel.
Your part-time job is something separate from your uni studies, and offers you a bit of a glimpse into the working world. You can list it on your CV and use it to prove you've got skills in organisation, communication, IT, problem-solving and even management if you move up in your role. Having these gives employers more reason to pay attention to your application, and can make it more likely that you'll score an interview. It also looks impressive that you've taken charge of your finances in a proactive way while still in your teens and early 20s.
The main thing to remember is that you're going for a part-time job, not full-time. This means you'll work less than 40 hours a week, and maybe even just five or 10 hours. Part-time jobs offer a flexibility that will help you keep up your coursework and earn some cash at a time that won't interfere with your studies. You can work during weekdays when you're not in class, on weekends in busy city centre shops, or you can take some shifts in a bar or restaurant on evenings. Part-time work doesn't have to take over your life, and can actually be something you enjoy as a break from your studies or a way to hang out with colleagues you've become friends with.

Today, part-time workers have the same legal rights as full-time workers. This means that no employer can discriminate against someone who works only a few hours a week by giving them fewer perks, less training, or making them first in the firing line if redundancies need to be made. Just like full-timers, part-time workers are entitled to benefits such as holiday pay, sick pay and other extras that come with the job.
