        FAQs
        What does an Accountant do?

Primarily, the role of an accountant is to prepare and record financial reports which they'll be tasked to analyse too. Accountants are also heavily relied upon to ensure that tax payments are paid correctly and within the deadline.

Their goal from these tasks is to help businesses to reach their financial objectives. However, these services can also be bought by individual clients too. For example, a client can pay an accountant to organise and manage their money in order to help them reach their personal financial goals, such as buying a property.

In summary, typical tasks that will be shown in a job description for an accountant include:

        • Tax accounting: this involves giving advice to individuals and businesses about how best to complete tax forms as well as ensuring they stay within the deadlines
        • Management accounting: predicting, analysing and preparing cost reports based on a specified budget
        • Financial accounting: creating financial statements for business shareholders
How much does an Accountant get paid?

Entry-level accountants or a trainee accountant salary is around £25,000 per annum on average.

The average salary for accountants in the UK (including from part-qualified to a chartered accountant salary) is around £62,000 per annum, according to AccountancyAge. However, top earners in the industry (such as partners in accountancy firms) can go on to earn six-figure annual salaries as large as £400,000!

Depending on the employer, accountants can also increase their yearly income through bonus structures.

What qualifications does an Accountant need?

It isn't necessary to have a degree to become an accountant. However, some accountant jobs might ask for one depending on the type of industry and business.

An alternative to University is to apply for an accountant apprenticeship. This route will normally allow you to study for your AAT qualification while also getting the first-hand experience within a working environment. You'll also start earning a salary! This is a solid and reliable route into assistant accountant jobs.

Higher level qualifications include the ACA, ACCA or CIMA, all of which can lead to becoming a chartered accountant.

Some companies have schemes that last from two to four years, such as the KPMG apprenticeship schemes.
