Helping you find a career in the Admin industry

Administration is crucial to the success of any business and is needed across just about every area what you can think of. Jobs within the sector are all about the attention to detail and planning that allow everything within a business or organisation to run smoothly.

The daily tasks for those working in administration include: managing diaries of senior members of staff, coordinating the office supply chain, assisting with HR, filing, assisting with payroll, dealing with incoming calls and greeting guests. The work will vary depending on the company that you work in.

What was once an industry that was seen to exist to serve others is now highly respected and recognised as a key component to a successful business. People working in administration jobs need to be hyper-organised and incredibly reliable, with one ear to the ground so they know what’s going on at all times.

Skills & interests required for a career in Admin
To have a successful career in administration you will need to have strong communication skills. You’ll be the intermediary between internal stakeholders and external clients or customers – particularly if you are the first point of contact in the business as a receptionist.

The next most important skill for working in the administration industry is organisation and attention to detail. Others will be relying on you and at times this work may need to be done quickly, and at the last minute, so you’ll need to be flexible and able to adapt your workload without stressing out.

Other essential skills to work in this field include:
- Communication
- Computer Programming
- Diligence
- Microsoft Excel
- Organisation
- Planning
- Problem Solving
- Teamwork
Admin apprenticeships & other career progress routes for school leavers
One particular way to progress within the administration industry is to become a specialist within a specific area and make you more valuable within this area. The most competitive industries for administration roles are medical and legal because the pay can be considerably more.

Those with language skills are similarly valuable to companies that have offices around the world. However, there are plenty of administration roles that do not require a second language.

Within administration there is always the opportunity to further your professional development through training courses. These ensure that you’re developing professionally staying up-to-date with the latest software and technology available and it’ll make you better equipped to make sure that your company continues to run as efficiently as possible – so it’s a win-win!

With a specialist skillset and some experience, you could move into a personal assistant role. Often these are high responsibility, as you’ll be the right hand person for your boss. This also means that the salary tends to be higher than general administration roles.
Tips for getting into the field
There are a large number of general, non-industry-related things that you can do to put yourself in a good position to start applying for jobs. These include:

- Tailoring your CV for each specific role, making sure you focus on the particular skills that are being asked for
- Taking on similar roles – for example as an admin assistant or similar, in the holidays
- Using your contacts – university professors, those you met on work experience, people you can approach through social media or LinkedIn – they’re all potentially the stepping stone that could help you find a job
What do Admin professionals get paid?
The salaries for office administrators are usually between £14,000 and £18,000 per year. With a few years of experience this will increase to somewhere between £19,000 and £23,000. Office managers will earn around £24,000.

The average personal assistant earns £25,000 a year, but with specialist industry knowledge it is quite common for this role to offer £30,000+ a year.

Here are some average salaries for other roles within administration:

Administrative assistant - £16,446
Office clerk - £17,144
Receptionist – £15,961
Office manager – £24,295
Administrative Support Manager – £24,712
Contract administrator – £20,460
Data entry clerk – £16,122
Personal assistant – £25,164
What qualifications do I need for a career in Admin?
Although there are no formal education requirements to work within administration, strong academic results will help to prove that you have the necessary written and verbal communication skills.

For a more specific qualification related to administration, school leavers should pursue a diploma or certificate in one of the following subjects:

- Diploma in Business Administration (Level 2)
- Certificate in Professional PA and Administrational Skills (Level 3)
- Certificate in Office and Administration Management (Level 4)
- Certificate in Principles of Business Administration (Level 4)
- Diploma in Business & Administrative Management (Level 4)
- Diploma in Business Administration (Level 4)
- Diploma in Business and Administrative Management (Level 5)
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Office Admin & Secretarial Course
- It’ll strengthen your chances of landing a job in this industry.
