Helping you find a career as a Credit controller

The fundamental role of a credit controller is to manage money borrowed or owed to a business. They coordinate the debts of current creditors and are responsible for the deciding whether allowing credit to debtor; and also play a role in recovering debts owed to a business.


What does a Credit controller do?
Credit controllers have a variety of responsibilities and may need to do some of the following on a daily or weekly basis:

  • Negotiating repayment plans

  • Deciding whether or not to offer credit

  • Ensuring customers pay on time

  • Setting up the terms and conditions of a loan

  • Keeping contact with clients to ensure invoices are clear for payment

  • Checking customers’ credit ratings with banks

  • Collection of all debts and customers payments

  • Dealing with internal and external queries about payments

  • Responsibility for reviewing debt recovery procedures

  • Posting and allocating daily receipts to accounting systems

  • Providing information on accounts to internal departments

Skills & interests required for a Credit controller
Credit controllers need to be good with numbers and able to use accounting software and Excel to calculate financial figures. Typically, a credit controller will need to be confident and articulate when contacting debtors to the organisation, and will need to be persistent (and polite) in making demands for repayment.

What hours does a Credit controller typically do?
This is primarily an office-based role where credit controllers are expected to work 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Overtime at busy periods will also be required.

How much does a Credit controller get paid?
The starting salary for a credit controller can range between £16,000 and £25,000 per annum, and with experience this can rise to £50,000+ per annum.
What qualifications does a Credit controller need?
There are no formal education requirements to enter a career as a credit controller, although many employers will expect a good level of education. A BTEC or HND in business or finance would be beneficial.
