          What does an Estate agent do?

          Estate agents will have a variety of regular tasks (the exact mix of which will depend on the type of property they specialise in and also in the size of estate agency they work for). These can include:

          • Collect information on a property and arrange for photographs to be taken
          • Visit and talk to sellers about the property and what it has to offer
          • Estimate the value of a property
          • Market properties
          • Represent the sellers in negotiation with prospective buyers
          • Oversee the whole selling process
          • Liaise with all interested parties. (e.g. mortgage brokers, solicitors, surveyors and other estate agents)
          • Advise clients about buying properties and support their decision
          • Make sure that the price agreed is within your buyer's budgets
          • Stay on top of buying trends in the property market
          • Draw up tenancy agreement contracts
          • Organise rent payment plans

          Estate agents need to be confident and flexible in how they work. Buying or renting a house is likely to be one of the biggest financial transactions in both a vendor and the customer's lives, so there is a level of responsibility expected from the agent in order to facilitate the transaction. Estate agents also need to be good at sales, able to hit monthly, quarterly and annual sales targets.

          What hours does an Estate agent typically do?

          Your typical working week will be between 35 to 40 hours a week, although it can include working unsocial hours, evenings and weekends - particularly for viewings.

          What environment is an Estate agent based in?

          Work is office-based but you will find that you will be spending a lot of time out of the office.

          How much does an Estate agent travel?

          You will have to travel between properties throughout the working day, so a full driving licence is extremely helpful for this job.

          How much does an Estate agent get paid?

          Starting salaries for are typically in the region of £14,000 to £20,000 per annum and with experience, salaries can rise to £25,000 to £60,000. In certain management positions, you could earn up to £100,000.

          Salaries are typically made up of a basic salary, plus commission, which is usually based on your sales performance. Commissions can be large and can significantly increase your take-home pay.

          What qualifications does an Estate agent need?

          A degree is not required for this role but, due to increasing competition, it is definitely more attractive to employers if you have a degree, foundation degree or HND. A number of employers in the sector will offer apprenticeship schemes for school leavers, and experience and personality count for a lot in the recruitment process.
