As a human resources officer, you will hire employees for your organisation and help to develop their careers, as well as look after employee relations, benefits and welfare. You may work in a dedicated HR department, or you might be attached to a specific business unit.


What does a Human resources officer do?
The role of a human resources officer can be extremely varied. Typically you may expect to have some of the following responsibilities on a daily or regular basis:

  • Dealing with complaints

  • Assisting in the recruitment process of new employees

  • Cooperating with other managers to improve employees’ experiences of the workplace

  • Keeping employee records

  • Setting up training and development for employees

  • Ensuring employees have the correct pay and benefits

  • Arranging employee services. (e.g. welfare and counselling)

  • Promoting equality policies, and health and safety

  • Organising meetings on matters like pay negotiations, redundancy and employment law

  • Developing HR policies and procedures

  • Recording confidential employee information

  • Writing employee handbooks

Skills & interests required for a Human resources officer
Above all else, human resources professionals need to be people-focused and have great interpersonal skills. You will be dealing with a wide variety of your company’s employees, from potentially the most senior to the most junior, and need to be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with everyone. It is highly likely that you will need to deal with difficult situations from an early stage in your career (e.g. making roles redundant, or in disciplinary proceedings), and therefore need to have empathy as well as being decisive.

How much does a Human resources officer get paid?
The typical starting salary for a human resources office ranges from £15,000 to £19,000 per annum. With more experience your salary will rise to between £18,000 to £25,000, and once you are highly experienced, your annual salary can be anywhere between £25,000 to £50,000.
What qualifications does a Human resources officer need?
Many employers expect you to have GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C). You could get into this industry with an HND or degree in human resource management, and you can study towards a qualification from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
