Helping you find a career as a Mechanic

Mechanics repair and maintain motor vehicles including cars, vans and motorbikes. Being a mechanic involves physical work and requires technical skills as well as an interest in engines and machines and how they work.

If you love cars and bikes a job as a mechanic is a rewarding opportunity to be involved in the motor industry and a successful mechanic may even gain chances to work in competitive motor racing.

What does a Mechanic do?
Mechanics work with a range of different motor vehicles, solving problems with the vehicle’s mechanical parts and repairing damage. Typical responsibilities for a mechanic can include:

  • Check and enforce safety standards

  • Fix vehicles and machines

  • Continued learning about motor vehicles

  • Checking and ordering parts

  • Testing parts and vehicles

  • Recording services and maintenance operations conducted

  • Estimated costs and necessary repair works

Skills & interests required for a Mechanic
Mechanics need to be passionate about motor vehicles and their engines. They also need to be good with numbers and able to explain complicated mechanical problems to their customers, most of whom will not be experts!
- Ability to Work Under Pressure
- Attention to detail
- Customer Service
- Engineering
- Technical skills
- Time Management
What hours does a Mechanic typically do?
38-45 hours a week is typical for a mechanic but working to deadlines can often extend these hours. Mechanics can also work on a call-out basis for emergency repairs, which can require working nights and weekends on a shift-basis.
What environment is a Mechanic based in?
Typically a garage but you may need to attend call outs across a broad geographical area.
How much does a Mechanic travel?
There may be a requirement for you to cover significant ground on a daily basis in a call-out van. If working in motor sports you may be required to travel internationally on a regular basis as part of a team.
How much does a Mechanic get paid?
Starting salaries around £18,000 per annum can grow with experience to as much as £35,000 for experienced mechanics. Motorsports workers may earn significantly higher salaries, although roles in the industry are highly prized and difficult to secure.
Perks & benefits
If working in motorsports your travel costs will be covered by your employer, and you will likely get the opportunity to attend races (when not working in the team garage!)
What qualifications does a Mechanic need?
You will require a level 2 qualification in light vehicle maintenance and repair as well as a full driving license. Lots of mechanics qualify via an apprenticeship.
