A production worker contributes to the manufacturing of parts and goods in various industries, including (but not limited to): construction, food and drink, pharmaceuticals, and engineering.


What does a Production worker (manufacturing) do?
A production worker in manufacturing will be expected to work as part of a team and under the supervision of a team/shift leader. Day-to-day duties may include:

  • Assembling goods on a production line

  • The packing of goods ready for shipment

  • Measuring, grading and feeding batches of raw materials into production machinery

  • Operating equipment for production line purposes

  • Reporting equipment and machinery defects to maintenance staff

  • The finishing for products (e.g. applying protective coatings)

  • Carrying out basic testing and quality checks

  • Monitoring the production process

  • Using lifting equipment and forklift trucks

  • Cleaning and maintaining work areas and machinery

Skills & interests required for a Production worker (manufacturing)
A production worker needs to be good at working with their hands, as well as working with larger machinery. Production workers need to be highly safety conscious and comfortable working in loud and hectic environments. Production workers will need to follow precise instructions to complete their part of the manufacturing process.

Most full-time production workers will be contracted to 37-40 hours per week. This could either be through regular Monday-Friday hours, or shift patterns. There are also often overtime opportunities available.
