As a satellite systems technician you will set up and look after satellite systems. You would be involved in installing new systems and improving old ones.

What does a Satellite systems technician do?
Day-to-day, you will have to:
  • Carry out site surveys to estimate and prepare job quotes

  • Plan cabling networks

  • Install and fix aerials or satellite dishes to mounts

  • Connect signal outlet sockets

  • Test equipment and fix faults

  • Make reports on tested equipment and keep them up-to-date on their maintenance

  • Check signal strengths

  • Interact with customers and try and find the source of their problem

  • Use specialised hand and power tools

  • Follow and understand detailed engineering design plans

What hours does a Satellite systems technician typically do?
Your typical working hours in this role will be between 40 and 45 hours a week, including weekend and evening work. You may find that you also have on-call duties to cover off-peak hours.

You will be required to travel to each customer/job and it is likely that you will be provided with a van to transport your equipment.

The average UK salary for a satellite systems technician is £27,560 per annum. In an entry-level position, you will earn between £16,000 to £18,000 per annum. Once you are experienced, your annual salary will increase to £20,000 to £25,000 per annum and once you are highly experience, you can earn between £25,000 to £30,000.
What qualifications does a Satellite systems technician need?
Employers may ask for electrical engineering NVQs. These can be acquired through a two-year college course. However, some employers may require GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C).

To work on a building site, you will need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.
