Helping you find a career in the Travel industry

Travel is a rapidly growing industry and was valued at an astronomical 5.5 trillion pounds in 2016. Whilst commercial travel is still booming, globalisation has meant that business travel has become a huge sub-section of the industry and transformed international travel from a luxury to a necessity.

Within travel there a huge number of roles available. Travel companies require agents to help assist with bookings and research and also a whole team behind-the-scenes responsible for marketing, HR, I.T and finance, amongst other roles.

The travel industry presents opportunities to travel around the world within certain roles. People are responsible for checking out hotels before partnering with a company or testing a tour route before selling it on the website. Also, many companies offer competitive benefits including staff discounts on their products.

It’s also an incredibly lively and fun industry, where you’ll be working with others who have a passion for travel.

Skills & interests required for a career in Travel
Good customer service skills are essential for roles such as a travel agent, where the majority of the day will be spent speaking to and assisting customers in booking their holidays.

Strong organisational skills will also help you in this industry because you will be planning on the behalf of others – it’s important not to get them wrong!

The best travel agents will also remain up to date with the industry, alongside news and current events in order to advise people on the best holiday destinations.

The specific skillset that you require will depend upon which area of a travel business you work in. Working in a marketing position, for example, will likely require copywriting and digital skills.

Other skills that will help you to be successful in the travel industry are:
- Multi-tasking
- Negotiation
- Problem Solving
Travel apprenticeships & other career progress routes for school leavers
There are many opportunities for career progression within travel that can make it a wide and varied career.

No matter which role you start out in, whether it is in the head office, a travel rep, or a tour operator, you will take on more responsibilities as you gain more experience in the field.

You will likely start out as an assistant, before becoming an executive and then progressing into a managerial position.

Many of the skills that you learn in the travel industry will be transferable and some choose to move into any other area of leisure and tourism.

A travel agency manager can earn between £25,000-£35,000, although this can be significantly higher in large firms.

International travel firms also offer benefits packages that could include discounts on products including flights, hotel stays and insurance.
What qualifications do I need for a career in Travel?
For a successful career in travel you do not need any formal requirements, but a Higher National Diploma in Travel and Tourism may help you to secure a job in the industry.
