The job

Summary of the job role

We exist to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to a great education.

Ark Teacher Training is a two-year school-based training programme. As a School Direct programme, you'll be based in the classroom from day one, having an impact straight away, but you won't be thrown in at the deep end. You'll be supported every step of the way and will receive 500 hours of face-to-face training.

You will be based in the location of your choice. We work in over 40 schools located in economically disadvantaged areas, or those with a history of academic underachievement. Our schools are in four regions in the UK:

- Birmingham
- Hastings
- London
- Portsmouth

As a trainee with Ark, you'll have access to:

Two-week summer school to introduce you to the programme and the principles of great teaching
Weekly training sessions with your fellow trainees focusing on a key part of your teaching such as behaviour management or curriculum

An in-school coach who you will work with you every week to plan lessons, observe your teaching and offer immediate tailored feedback

Support from a network of education experts, a dedicated tutor and fellow trainees in your school and across the programme

At the end of your first year, you'll receive a PGCE qualification and Qualified Teacher Status. In your second year, you'll follow our supportive NQT programme to continue developing your skills.

There are two main types of funding available to help with your training; salary and bursary. Regardless of which funding route you start on, in year two, you'll be paid a salary like all other qualified teachers.

Ark Teacher Training was rated 'outstanding' in all areas by Ofsted in January 2017.
Become the best teacher you can be with Ark Teacher Training.

How they'll spend their day

Classroom teaching - You'll be in the classroom from day one meaning you can start having an impact straight away, with plenty of support. In fact, you'll teach at least 120 lessons alongside an outstanding teacher. As you start the programme, you'll team-teach with your coach, taking on responsibility as the year progresses, such as independently teaching some subjects. By the end of the first year, you'll be teaching the whole curriculum to your class.

Weekly training sessions - Every week you'll come together with your fellow trainees for face-to-face training with your Ark Teacher Training tutor. Sometimes these sessions will focus on how to teach your subject and sometimes they will focus on broader areas like dealing with behaviour or assessment. All training combines strong theoretical foundations with practising key techniques - so you'll be able to test them out with peers before trying them in your class.

Weekly coaching - Every week you'll be observed and have a feedback session with your coach. They will work with you to identify a targeted, bite-sized change in your practice that will help you improve most the following week. For example, one week it could be changing the way you greet students at the door.

Weekly co-planning - You will work with a great teacher to plan your lessons - someone who has lots of experience teaching your subject. This means you'll have the opportunity to ask all the detailed questions you may have about how to teach specific elements of your subject's curriculum.

Required Education
- hold (or will hold) an undergraduate Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) prior to beginning your Initial Teacher Training
- have a grade C or above in Maths and English language GCSE (and a science subject if you are applying to teach primary)

Required Skills
- Strong subject knowledge
- Share Ark's ethos and values
- Great communication skills
- Resilience
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn
- Self-awareness and reflectiveness
- Be a great decision maker

Good Education & Skills to have
We ideally look for candidates who have achieved?a 2:1 or above at degree level. For secondary, your degree or A-levels must be related to the subject you want to teach
