Helping you find a career in Preston

Preston is a city set in Lancashire in the north of England. Home to the University of Central Lancashire, Preston is both a busy student city and a thriving historic centre. Nestled in the beautiful Lancashire countryside, this city has something for everyone; walks, entertainment, nightlife, and plenty of food and drink.

Transport links
The city is only 12 miles from Blackpool International Airport. This is a small airport operating flights to the Isle of Man, Ronaldsway Airport, and Belfast. The journey from the city to the airport is approximately 25 minutes by car, 30 minutes by train plus a five minute walk, and is also accessible by bus.

30 miles from Preston is the larger Manchester Airport. There is a direct train service running to the airport from Preston Station which takes about an hour. There are similarly direct routes by coach which also take an hour. Alternatively, the airport is accessible by car, with the journey taking around 45 minutes.

The third airport close to the city is the Liverpool John Lennon Airport and is around an hour’s journey from the city. By train it is a longer journey of 2 hours 15 minutes, and by bus it is 2 hours 45.

Within the city itself there is a detailed bus network running regularly. There are also several night routes available.

There are 4 rail stations in and around Preston: Preston, Salwick, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hill. The latter three have hourly services, but Preston Railway Station itself offers a regular service. The station sits on the West Coast Mainline and has 8 platforms. The services operating from this station are the Caledonian Sleeper, Northern, TransPennine Express and Virgin Trains, with the Great Northwestern Railway and Merseyrail being introduced in the next few years.

There are plenty of cycle routes on Preston roads as well as cycle rides in the surrounding countryside.
Renting Prices
The average rent for a one bedroom property in Preston is £482 per calendar month (pcm).

The average rent for a room is £761 pcm, for a flat the average price is £724 pcm, and for a house is around £812 pcm.
Nightlife
The city has a large student scene, with around 35,000 students studying at the University of Central Lancashire. Preston itself is known for having some of the best pubs in the Northwest of England. There are also many clubs, as well as popular live music venues and plenty of places to eat and drink. Alternatively, if you fancy a night out by the sea, Blackpool is a popular destination.
Notable Attractions
Preston has something for everyone, whether you are a steam railway enthusiast, a hiker, or into your music. The music venues 53 degrees and Mad Ferret boast a past line up of Professor Green and the Pigeon Detectives. The city is also rooted in historic architecture, such as the Harris Library, or St Walburge's Church, making it a place for everyone. Blackpool is a short 20 minute train journey if you fancy a day by the sea.
The economy in Preston
Preston is known as the administrative centre of Lancashire and is a large centre for the British defence aerospace. As well as this the city has a big financial scene, fuelling the economy in the area. The city also attracts a large sector of employment for commercial, transport, energy and construction.
