York's gothic cathedral is one of the city's most popular tourist destinations and it is indeed a sight to behold. You should check out the gory and ghoulish York Dungeons as well as JORVIK Viking Centre for a crash course in York's exciting and complicated history.

You can also check out the monastic ruins of Fountains Abbey or the gorgeous Castle Howards, both nestled in the countryside of the county.
