Design engineers work across the whole process of an engineering project, from conception to completion.
They come up with solutions to existing engineering problems across a huge range of industries, work out the practical side of the design and often oversee the project. Graduate design engineers are high in demand so there a number of graduate design engineer jobs stretching across a range industries. You could find yourself working in anything from environment, to automobiles, to product or software.
Of course, design engineers will need to be completed clued up on engineering theory in the area that you're looking to work in. That's why most employers will be looking for a degree in design engineering, or at least a general engineering qualification.
There are also a number of soft skills that will benefit design engineers; they have to be creative problem solvers and also excellent communicators. They are working with complex mechanisms and theory, which will need to be explained to people who are not experts in engineering.
