Helping you find a career as a Graphic designer

Graphic designers produce visual media which can be used for magazines, adverts, brochures and even video games. They can work either in print or online, and in a variety of industries.

What does a Graphic designer do?
Although there are a number of different types of roles graphic designers fill, a typical day would involve:

- Liaising with the client to formulate ideas
- Discussing budget and deadline
- Presenting preliminary ideas
- Getting feedback/ approval from client
- Producing the final layout with specialist software
What hours does a Graphic designer typically do?
As a graphic designer you can expect to work around 37 hours a week, usually within the core office hours of 9am – 5.30pm. However, working overtime during evenings and weekends is common when deadlines are approaching.
What environment is a Graphic designer based in?
A studio or an office, depending on the role and personal preference.
How much does a Graphic designer travel?
As you will spend the majority of your time in the office or studio, travel is generally limited to visiting clients.
How much does a Graphic designer get paid?
At an entry level position, graphic designers can expect to earn around £16,000 to £18,000 a year. After a few years of experience, this can increase to anywhere from £20,000 to £30,000 a year.

Those who go on to become senior designers, with a wealth of experience, can expect to earn the highest salaries, typically earning between £35,000 and £50,000 a year.
What qualifications does a Graphic designer need?
Although there are no formal requirements, most employers will expect to have at least a HND in graphic design or another visual art, with many requiring a full undergraduate degree.

You'll also need to have developed your own portfolio, something normally done throughout university.
