          What does a Marketing Assistant do?

          Whilst marketing as an industry is very creative, a marketing assistant will tend to have administrative and research responsibilities until they've got a bit more experience under their belt. A typical day for a marketing assistant will be:

          • Assisting the marketing manager and/or the marketing team with ad-hoc tasks
          • Support the team in creating marketing materials (such as leaflets)
          • Help the team with creating editorial copy (such as blogs and press releases)
          • Doing research on behalf of the team to support them in creating editorial pieces
          • Helping brainstorm creative ideas for marketing campaigns
          • Writing and proofread copy
          • Maintaining spreadsheets to track the success of work carried out by the department
          • Monitoring the team's analytical tools to track success
          • Speaking to employees in different departments to move work along (such as working with the graphic design team to provide images for the marketing materials)
          • Being the main point of contact for managing enquiries
          • Making enquiries internally on behalf of the team to help support projects and campaigns
          • Attending client meetings to taking notes
          • Attending trade shows and exhibitions
          • Assisting with the company's own events
          • Helping compile presentations
          What hours does a Marketing Assistant typically do?

          Marketing professionals tend to work the standard office hours, which is normally 9am - 5.30am (give or take.) However, as the marketing assistant, you might be expected to work a few extra hours in the lead up to a campaign or deadline.

          How much does a Marketing Assistant travel?

          How much travel you need to do will depend entirely on the company you're employed by. Some companies, for example, will have offices in other cities in the UK (or even overseas) and may ask that you travel there to work periodically. Alternatively, you may be required to travel to external meetings - for example, very often a marketing agency will be expected to travel to their client's office to have meetings.

          How much does a Marketing Assistant get paid?

          A marketing assistant will earn around £18,000 - £25,000 per annum, depending on location. If the living cost of the city is higher, the salary will tend to reflect that.

          The average salary of a marketing manager position (in London) is around £45,000 per annum, with some professionals earning as much as £68,000 per annum. Marketing directors will earn £90,000 per annum on average.

          What qualifications does a Marketing Assistant need?

          Some companies will ask for A-Levels and at least five GCSEs. Others seek marketing or business related degrees from their candidates.

          An alternative route to a degree is gaining a qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), such as the Foundation Certificate or Certificate in Professional Marketing. Some entry-level marketing professionals have chosen to study for one of CIM's qualifications while they're working. Companies have also been known to support their employees in gaining one of their qualifications through funding and/or allocated study days.
