A retail buyer’s responsibilities involve planning and selecting product ranges to be sold by retailers. The buyer has to consider demand for a product and how many competitors also sell the product in question. Ultimately keeping up to date with market trends is important, as is a willingness to research and negotiate.


What does a Retail buyer do?
Day-to-day, you will:
  • Analyse consumer choices

  • Research competitors

  • Plan product ranges based on findings

  • Meet suppliers

  • React to changes in price, demand, or logistics

  • Write reports

  • Get customer feedback

  • Present new product ranges to senior retail staff

  • Attend trade fairs and research the market

  • Keep up to date on seasonal changes

What hours does a Retail buyer typically do?
Retail buyers often find themselves working to tight deadlines and as a result peak times can see hours exceed 9AM to 5PM. Travelling to trade fairs and other events may also be demanding in terms of hours and early starts.

Freelance opportunities do arise for more experienced retail buyers but part time positions are not typical.
