The NHS operates a Management Training Scheme for both internal and external graduate entrants. General management is one of the three specialisms that candidates can apply for (the other two being finance management and human resource management). The scheme is designed to recruit very able people, from both inside and outside the NHS, who can make an impact and rise to the top jobs in the NHS. The types of NHS roles initially entered by graduates of the General Management Training Scheme include service manager, project manager and contracts manager, and these roles can be in primary care, hospital trusts or strategic health authorities.
