Helping you find a career in Teaching & education

Teaching and education is an incredibly important industry – responsible for moulding the minds of tomorrow. No matter what your specific role is, it’s a very rewarding career choice.

Salaries begin at £22,917 for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and can rise quite quickly. You will also be paid for any extra responsibilities that you take on – such as hosting after-school clubs, or being the head of a department. Typically private school teachers will be paid more than state school teachers.

Teachers also have a great benefits package including long holidays, excellent pension and the opportunity to develop their career through government-funded initiatives such as the Teaching and Leadership Innovation Fund.

You will be a source of inspiration to those who you are teaching, so it’s important to be able to convey your enthusiasm for a subject and be able to motivate those who don’t feel like engaging with education – particularly if you’re teaching children.

The industry also relies on the support staff within schools such as welfare officers and teaching assistants. Most schools also require specially trained support staff to assist children with special needs.

Within teaching and education people immediately imagine teaching children, but there are many other roles you could within this industry. You could be working in government developing curriculums, teaching adults or working in education writing the books that are used in classrooms across the country.

Skills & interests required for a career in Teaching & education
To work within teaching and education, you must first and foremost be passionate about what you do. Teachers can come from a variety of backgrounds with different approaches to teaching, but there are some key skills that all will require:
  • Patience (potentially bucket loads of it)

  • Creativity to explain ideas in a variety of ways to make it clear to students who may not understand initially

  • Organisational skills to plan lessons

  • Resilience

  • Leadership

  • Confidence to lead classes

  • Communication
What Teaching & education work experience do you need?
A lot of schools tend to allow work experience, which will give you the chance to observe professional teachers and ask any questions that you may have about the profession. You will have to get a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in order to do this. You’ll need this to have any work experience with children. Check out this advice from the Department of Education for details on how to secure this experience.

You could also look at summer camps, weekend children’s clubs or helping out with your local school’s performances. All of these will show your commitment to the industry and also help to feel prepared for when you start a work placement or job in a school.

Many people who choose to go into education have also done some part-time tutoring, either with a charity or privately. This gives you the chance to experience teaching either one-on-one or in small groups, and might be less daunting than jumping straight into a full classroom.
